Perimenopause can start in your late 30s and last 4 to 10 years. It is the single most important window to build muscle, protect bone, and reset your metabolism before menopause arrives. Jensen Fitness is Calgary's integrated perimenopause coaching team: certified personal trainers and a licensed Registered Dietitian building one coordinated plan for your training, nutrition, sleep, and recovery, led by Christine Jensen, who has lived this transition herself.
Perimenopause coaching is a structured fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle program built for women whose hormones have started fluctuating, typically between the mid-30s and early 50s. At Jensen Fitness in Calgary, it combines hormone-smart strength training, Registered Dietitian nutrition, and weekly coaching to address weight gain, fatigue, poor sleep, and muscle loss before menopause. Available in person in SE Calgary or online, starting with a free consultation.
If you are in your late 30s, 40s, or early 50s and any of these feel like your daily reality, your hormones are likely already shifting. None of this is a willpower problem, and none of it is solved by more cardio and fewer calories.
Weight settling around your belly even though nothing about your eating changed.
Waking at 3am, night sweats, or never feeling rested no matter how early you go to bed.
Afternoon exhaustion, workouts that drain you for days instead of energizing you.
Shorter fuse, low mood, or anxiety that seems to come out of nowhere.
Losing words, forgetting why you walked into a room, struggling to focus.
Cycles getting shorter, longer, heavier, or skipping entirely.
Aches, joint stiffness, and soreness lasting longer after normal activity.
Muscle you worked hard for quietly disappearing, especially after 40.
Coaching in perimenopause is different from coaching in menopause because the hormonal environment is different. Knowing your stage tells us how to train and fuel you.
Cycles still regular but symptoms creep in: sleep changes, PMS intensifies, recovery slows. The best time to start strength training seriously.
Cycles become irregular, estrogen swings hard, bone density loss accelerates. Training, protein, and recovery strategy become non-negotiable.
Hormones settle at a new low baseline. The strategy shifts from managing fluctuation to rebuilding metabolism and muscle deliberately.
Muscle, bone, heart, and brain health become the long game. The habits built in perimenopause pay off here.

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause when estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone begin to fluctuate unpredictably. It typically starts in a woman's late 30s or 40s and lasts anywhere from 4 to 10 years. Unlike menopause, where hormones settle at a stable low, perimenopause is defined by swings: high estrogen one month, low the next. That volatility is why symptoms feel so random and why the strategies that worked in your 20s and 30s stop working, or even start working against you.
Common perimenopause symptoms include stubborn midsection weight gain, disrupted sleep and night sweats, fatigue and energy crashes, mood swings and anxiety, brain fog, irregular or heavier cycles, slower recovery from exercise, joint aches, and gradual loss of muscle tone. Bone density loss also accelerates in late perimenopause, making this the most important window in a woman's life to strength train.
As estrogen fluctuates, your body becomes more sensitive to stress. Punishing bootcamp workouts and aggressive calorie cutting raise cortisol, which tells a perimenopausal body to hold on to fat, especially around the midsection, and to break down muscle. That is the exact opposite of what you want.
The evidence-based approach is different: progressive strength training to build and protect muscle and bone, adequate protein and hormone-supportive nutrition guided by a Registered Dietitian, deliberate recovery and stress regulation, and sleep as a trainable skill rather than an afterthought. This is precisely how the Jensen Fitness perimenopause program is built, and it is why our clients stop spinning their wheels and finally see results that hold.
Perimenopause is the years of hormonal fluctuation leading up to your final period, while menopause is officially reached after 12 consecutive months without a period. The two phases require different coaching strategies. In perimenopause we manage volatility and build reserves; in menopause we rebuild metabolism and muscle at a new hormonal baseline. Jensen Fitness coaches both, with a dedicated Menopause Coaching program for women past their final period and a weight loss program for women focused on hormone-smart fat loss at any stage.
Perimenopause Coaching at Jensen Fitness is designed exclusively for women in the years leading up to menopause, when your body starts feeling different, your old methods stop working, and symptoms show up that nobody warned you about.
This is not a one-size-fits-all plan. With over 20 years of coaching experience, we have built a fully integrated system that addresses the specific challenges of the perimenopausal years: fluctuating hormones, metabolic resistance, disrupted sleep, mood changes, gut health, and midsection weight gain.
At the heart of the program is a collaborative team: certified personal trainers and a licensed Registered Dietitian working together on one strategy for you. We combine hormone-smart strength training, personalized nutrition, recovery strategies, and education so you build muscle, protect bone, restore energy, and enter menopause stronger than you entered your 40s.
We take the guesswork out of this transition and give you a clear, proven path forward, so you can stop starting over and use these years to your advantage.
Christine's system is designed to empower women through every stage of life, from navigating hormonal shifts to optimizing health and fitness at any age. Understanding that each woman's journey is unique, Christine's approach goes beyond one-size-fits-all programs. It's a personalized, evidence-based system that addresses the diverse challenges women face, whether you're managing perimenopause, looking to shed stubborn weight, or simply seeking to feel more energized and strong. Every woman deserves a program that works for her, and Christine’s approach ensures that you’re supported, understood, and empowered to thrive at any life stage.

At Jensen Fitness, we know how exhausting it is to feel like you’re doing everything right and getting nowhere. Some of our clients are working to rebuild their metabolism, others simply need strategy and expert coaching. Menopause changes your body—but it shouldn’t change your power over it. That’s why we built this program: to meet you where you are, with strategies that align with your phase of life.
You deserve more than a generic plan. You deserve science-backed coaching, real education, and a team who sees all of you—not just the number on the scale. Thats why we take the time to understand each client’s needs from day one and adjust throughout the journey.
This program is designed to support your full health—nutrition, strength, mindset, and more. If you're curious about next steps, we also offer maintenance nutrition coaching and strength programs for long-term support.
You don’t have to figure this out alone. You don’t have to start over again.
We believe education and ongoing care are essential. Whether you're looking to understand metabolic resistance, explore post-program maintenance, or dive deeper into strength training during menopause, we’ve got you covered. We care about your results and long term success.
We know perimenopause and menopause coaching is a real commitment, and you deserve to feel confident before you begin. Below are the most common questions from women who are ready for change and want to make sure this is the right fit.
Most women begin perimenopause in their 40s, but some may notice symptoms as early as their mid to late 30s. The timing varies based on genetics, overall health, and individual hormonal changes.
Perimenopause can last anywhere from four to ten years, although every woman's experience is different. Symptoms may fluctuate throughout this time as hormone levels continue to change.
Yes. Perimenopause coaching provides personalized support with nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and healthy lifestyle habits. While coaching does not replace medical care, it can help women better understand their symptoms and build sustainable routines that support their overall health and well-being.
Strength training helps counter the natural muscle loss that happens with age and hormonal change. Since muscle supports metabolism, energy use, and body composition, maintaining it becomes one of the most effective ways to support weight loss and overall health during perimenopause and menopause.
Yes, our program is designed for both perimenopause and menopause transitions.
Hormonal weight gain happens when systems like cortisol, insulin, and estrogen shift in ways that change how the body stores fat, uses energy, and regulates appetite. Chronic stress, disrupted sleep, aging, and long-term dieting can all influence these hormones. Many women in Calgary notice weight gain even when their habits have not changed, which can feel confusing and discouraging. Unlike lifestyle weight gain, hormonal weight gain does not respond well to eating less or exercising more. It requires restoring balance, improving recovery, and supporting metabolism through a hormone-aware strategy.
