The Three Worst Fad Diets of 2020

Have you been searching for a diet for weight loss Calgary? Not sure which one to choose though? Part of the process entails wading through all the newest fad diets that have hit the market in the past year, and making sure you don't fall victim to their spurious claims. That's why we've rounded up the three worst fad diets so far for 2020.

Every year there seems to be a new online weight loss program or fad diet that takes the world by storm. They often claim to provide immediate results with minimal effort, and inevitably fade away as more research is conducted on them. With that in mind, here are the three worst fad diets of 2020 that you need to avoid if you're serious about weight loss Calgary.

1. The Whole30 Diet

On the surface the Whole30 diet seems like a good diet. You eat lots of fruits and veggies and forego packaged foods. But it's not just packaged foods that are prohibited, which is where this very restrictive diet starts to fall apart. Whole30 claims that in just 30 days you'll feel better, lower inflammation, and completely change your relationship with food by only eating food that is 'good for you'. This includes the aforementioned fruit and veggies, meat and seafood, eggs, and healthy fats such as avocados and olive oil. On the no-no list are things like added sugars, fibre-rich foods, and alcohol. But science is slowly starting to eat away at this Instagram diet fad, with experts saying 30 days isn't enough time to provide the benefits it claims. And fibre-rich foods, which again are severely restricted in the diet, have actually been shown to help reduce inflammation. In addition to the weak science backing the Whole30 diet, there's also a worry amongst psychologists that this type of restrictive diet can be highly hurtful to those who have a history of disordered eating, or those who are at risk of doing so.

2. The Baby Food Diet

Ya it's as nasty as it sounds. You eat baby food for two of your daily meals and revert back to being a normal human adult when dinner rolls around. Aside from being perhaps the least appetizing fad diet out there right now, the baby food diet can lead to a severe lack of protein and healthy fats within your body. You're also likely to be well low of your recommended daily caloric intake, seeing how baby food containers usually only pack about 30 to 100 calories in each jar. Don't even give this diet a second thought.

3. The Carnivore Diet

I have to admit I was pretty excited when I first heard about this one, which is essentially the antithesis to the baby food diet. Meat, meat, and more meat (and some eggs and cheese). What could go wrong? Well, for starters, the carnivore diet is extremely high in saturated fat which can put you at a higher risk for elevated cholesterol levels. Secondly, you miss out on a lot of really healthy food such as those fruits and vegetables we're always hearing about when it comes to losing weight and fending off diseases. Sadly, some things are too good to be true. The carnivore diet is one of them.
