We're somewhat in limbo right now. Vaccines are being rolled out but the threat of COVID remains high. If you have been heeding the advice from public health officials and staying home as much as possible, here are five easy at-home exercise activities you and your family can do to stay in shape.

We aren't out of the woods quite yet when it comes to COVID-19. While vaccines are offering a potential end to the tumultuous and difficult time we've been through over the past year, the virus remains an ongoing threat.

We all know that exercise is good for our physical health, but it can also be a great tool for improving our mental health. That's why it's so important to remain physically active during tough times like we've been facing. If you've been running short on ideas of how you and your family can stay in physical and mental shape while safely hunkering down at home, here are five activities you guys can do.

1. Cleaning

You've got to do it anyway! Cleaning chores don't get enough credit when it comes to how physically demanding they can be. If you've ever had to vacuum up dog hair from your carpet or rug though, you know just how easy it is to break a sweat while doing it. Other great calorie-burning cleaning chores include dusting, mopping, sweeping, and cleaning your bathrooms or windows. It's the perfect full-body workout, and your house will look great once you're done.

2. Weight Training With Household Objects

Don't have any free weights or kettlebells kicking around the house? No problem. Pick up some big bags of flour or heavy cans and you'll be doing free weight training in no time. If you really want to improve your strength, try loading up a reusable shopping back with a bunch of household items and do some bicep curls, tricep extensions, lunges, or squats with them.

3. Put Those Stairs to Use

Just going up and down the stairs in your house a few times will provide a great exercise, but you can take things to the next level by getting a little inventive. Try doing some air squats by doing some single-leg step-ups on the stairs. Or blast your calves by placing the front of your feet on the edge of a step so your heels hang off, then raise up onto your tippy-toes to do some calf raises. You can even do some modified push-ups by placing your hands on a higher step, then continuing with the standard push-up motion.

4. Wall Sits Anyone?

If you have some competitive kids at home, this exercise can be a great way to tucker them out fast. Just find a wall in your house without any pictures or paintings hanging from it and try to locate a stud you can rest your back against (we don't want any overzealousness causing someone to go through the drywall). Then sink your butt down so your knees are at a 90° angle and hold the position as long as you can. To make this exercise even more challenging, do some squats while your back is against the wall. Your quads will be the size of tree trunks in no time!

5. Try an Online Training Program or Free Workout Class

There's no shortage of free online workout videos that you can cast to your TV, or if you have a smart TV, you can just boot them up on an app such as YouTube. If there has ever been a class or workout such as barre or kickboxing that you've always wanted to try, this is the perfect opportunity to give them a go without having to worry about being intimidated or embarrassed. And if you're looking for something a little more personalized and tailored to your specific goals, online personal training can be a great way to stay in shape at home.

Be as Active as You Can at Home

2020 was a heck of a weird year. With us spending so much time in our houses, we may have developed some poor habits along the way. While we aren't free and clear of COVID quite yet, there is that bright light at the end of the tunnel in the form of vaccines. Until you and your family get inoculated though, you'll most likely want to stay home as much as you can. Just make sure you're being active while you are by using the five exercise activities we've provided.
