  • 4 Easy Ways to Curb Food Cravings and Avoid Extra Poundage These Holidays

Food cravings can completely overwhelm your willpower and prove destructive to your weight loss plans. Here are four easy ways you can curb them, so you don't pack on any extra poundage these holidays.

There's a reason you're never supposed to hit the grocery store on an empty stomach. Once you reach the checkout and start unloading all the chocolate, chips, frozen pizza, and ice cream, it's evident why. If you find yourself craving the aforementioned unhealthy foods quite often, you're not alone. Studies suggest they're the 95 per cent most craved foods of all time.

While this holiday season may look a little different than the ones of past thanks to COVID-19, the silver lining with that is our bodies may get a slight reprieve from the bountiful feasts that typically accompany this time of year. But what about the food in my fridge, you say. Ah, yes. We have the easy tricks to curb those cravings dead in their tracks. Read on to find out what they are.

4 Easy Ways to Curb Food Cravings and Avoid Extra Poundage These Holidays

If weight loss is your goal, you probably know all too well how debilitating and frustrating food cravings can be. They're likely part of the reason you've reached a point in your life where shedding some of the additional poundage you've put on has become a main goal of yours. But there are easy ways to curb them. Here are the main four.

1. Grab something warm and healthy

No, we're not talking about Brad Pitt since he kicked the booze a few years back. Though grabbing him would surely put any food cravings to the back of your mind. Instead, we're talking about a cup of barley soup or a mug of peppermint tea. Consuming both types of food will boost your feelings of comfort and fullness, and even sniffing a hint of peppermint will sometimes curb even the most demanding of cravings.

2. Don't completely restrict yourself from your favourite foods

There's a reason overly restrictive diets usually fail. By prohibiting yourself from eating your favourite foods, when you do eventually slip up and indulge, you're likely to consume 40 percent more calories than if you were to allow yourself the occasional treat. So yes, eat those slices of pizza or chips once a week guilt-free, so long as you do so in moderation. That means instead of grabbing four slices, grab two, and instead of eating the whole bag, put some in a bowl to enjoy.

3. Make your favourite foods harder to get

By putting barriers between you and your favourite food cravings, you'll be less likely to put the effort in to go and grab them. By making these unhealthy options less convenient to obtain, you'll lower your chances of falling victim to their tempting ways. Out of sight, out of mind, as they say. If barriers are not enough to stop you from succumbing to your cravings, then purchase smaller portions or bite-sized versions of your favourite treats. You'll be following the second piece of advice on this list, without the possibility of fully giving in to your cravings and devouring an entire chocolate bar or frozen pizza in the process.

4. Refocus your mind on something else

If the above tactics are proving to be unfruitful, you can always refocus your mind and trick yourself into not wanting the foods you're currently craving. The way you can do this is through either neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) or the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) of tapping. NPL works in the sense that when you are craving something, you refocus your mind to think of something unrelated to food, such as the smell of rain or the image of waves crashing against a beach. Doing so can reduce your desire to eat the specific food you're currently craving.

EFT tapping is a sort of acupressure technique wherein you tap certain pressure points on your body while viewing and smelling your most craved foods. The pressure points recommended for this technique can be found between your wrist and pinky on your hand, the top of your head, your temples, above your top lip, and the middle of your chest. While the scientific efficacy of these two techniques is far from settled, they can't hurt to try.

So there you have it. Four easy ways you can curb your food cravings this holiday season and avoid adding any extra poundage to your frame.
