Pros and Cons of Group Fitness Training

Compared to one on one personal training, group fitness training classes can be an affordable and cost-effective way to improve your strength and shed some pounds. If you are considering joining a group fitness class instead of personal training classes, here are some of the pros and cons you should think about:

Pros

  1. Variety: While consistency in your workout routine is key, sometimes boredom can set in. Unlike one on one training, fitness classes are typically engaging and high energy, which makes it ideal for clients who are looking to have fun while shedding some pounds. Most classes involve a fun instructor and a variation of activities that will keep you interested, engaged, and giving your workout 100%.

  1. Accountability: If you are held accountable to your workouts, you are more likely to succeed at your weight loss goals. Fitness classes allow you to develop a bond with your instructors and peers, which makes it less likely that you’ll skip out on a class. This ensures consistency, which is key to weight loss.

  1. Cost-Effective: Personal training can become quite expensive and while group classes can range in price, they are usually quite affordable. In fact, many classes include gym membership, which allow you to take advantage of the equipment and take as many group classes as you’d like.

Cons

  1. May Not Always Fit to Your Schedule: At larger gyms, group training classes are only offered at specific times of the day. If you are very busy, or if your work schedule varies, it may make it harder to get to the classes you want on a regular basis.

  1. Not enough personalization. One of the problems with group classes is that they may fail to strike the balance between not pushing hard enough and forcing you to overtrain. For example, if you’re more experienced, a group class may force you to plateau, but if you are a beginner, you may be at risk of overtraining. Group classes are often hard for people with injuries, mobility restrictions, or any other specific requirements.

  1. Lack of attention to form: While group instructors do work to correct form, they cannot devote all of their attention to each attendee for the entire duration of the session. This means that small issues that aren’t glaringly obvious, but may cause injury, can go uncorrected.
