Now that the sun is out and the weather is warmer, you can no longer use the cold weather and bad road conditions as an excuse to skip a workout. It is time you put those excuses to rest, as powering through a strength training or cardio workout outside comes with a plethora of benefits including greater calorie burn and major mood boost. When you think about outdoor training, you might only think of running or cycling. However, there are plenty of other fun ways to get your body moving outside if you are not huge into going for runs or bike rides. If you are in the mood for something fun and fresh to keep your body moving, keep reading to learn about some unique outdoor workout activities.

Ideas For Outdoor Training

Running And Trail Running
We will start off with an old classic, running. If you are new to running, don’t worry, there are plenty of running resources out there to help you get started. A personal trainer can develop a personalized running program to help you reach your goals of getting more comfortable at running or being able to run 5 km or a whole marathon! There are also a variety of running apps out there that can help you get started. If you are already an experienced runner, challenge yourself with some trail running. Within the city there are many rugged running trails that can help you strengthen your endurance and challenge your body to running on unmaintained trails. You can also join a running club or register yourself to do a marathon or run for charity. 

Sport Training
You do not need to be a professional athlete to train and play a sport. Playing an outdoor sport is a great way to get the benefits of socialization, exercise, and time in the sun all at once. Sports such as rugby, ultimate frisbee, soccer, tennis, and so much more can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities. Look to see if your local community offers recreational sports leagues you can join, or you can get some friends together to play a fun game of any outdoor sport of your choosing. 

Boot Camps/Circuit Classes
There are many personal trainers who set up outdoor boot camps and outdoor circuits to give clients a change of scenery and incorporate their surroundings into the circuit. Boot camps are usually high intensity and tend to be based on military principles to ensure you are getting in a full, sweaty workout. Joining a boot camp is also a great opportunity to meet new people who share the same interests in exercise as you. So not only will you be improving your fitness, you will also make friends along the way.

Park Workouts
You can use almost all of the equipment at your local park to create a unique and fun outdoor workout session. For example, you can use the monkey bars to do pull-ups, hanging leg raises, hanging sit-ups, skin the cats, and typewriter where you move sideways across each bar before moving forwards. You can use a park bench to do tricep dips, squats, box jumps, and Bulgarian split squats, and you can even use a tree to help you practice handstands, wall sits, and wall walks. There are endless possibilities when it comes to training outside at your local park. Knowing how you can use the park space to your advantage will make exercising outside that much more enjoyable.

Q: Can I ask my personal trainer to do our workouts outside?
A: If you prefer working out outside, let your personal trainer know! Your trainer wants to make your workout sessions as enjoyable as possible so you can feel excited about exercising. Keep in mind, some exercises that require weight training may have to be performed in the gym to use special equipment. 

Q: Can a personal trainer help me with my nutrition?
A: Yes, a personal trainer will be able to give you some tips and tricks when it comes to food habits to help you see better results in the gym. Unless your personal trainer has a nutritional certification, they will not be able to come up with meal plans for you and can only recommend certain foods you should be eating. 

Q: How many times should I exercise per week?
A: It is recommended that everyone gets at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, however, if you are embarking on your fitness or weight loss journey, you should be going into the gym at least three times per week.
